‘Double tap’ airstrikes: How Israel targets Gaza rescue efforts

July 24, 2025 - In the aftermath of bombings, the Israeli army routinely fires on Palestinian rescue workers, paramedics, and other civilians to prevent them from saving the wounded, an investigation reveals.

Intentional attacks on medical personnel during armed conflict are considered war crimes under international humanitarian law, specifically the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols.

Here's why:
  • Medical Neutrality: Medical personnel, facilities, and transports are meant to be neutral spaces in conflict, allowing aid to be delivered impartially to the wounded and sick, regardless of their affiliation.
  • Geneva Conventions: These international agreements explicitly protect medical personnel and facilities during wartime, making deliberate targeting a violation. Medics wearing distinctive emblems (like a red cross, red crescent, or red crystal) are particularly protected.
  • War Crimes: Deliberate attacks on medics or any hindrance to their duties are considered war crimes. In some cases, such actions could even be considered crimes against humanity.
